5 yard Lowlander or casual kilt

In response to customer requests the casual kilt was born nearly 12 years ago now. We call it our Lowlander kilt , to separate it from the garments that pretend to be kilts made out of acrylic, cotton, and other products. If a kilt is not made out of wool, it simply is not a kilt. You can call it what you want, but it is not a real kilt. The Lowlander kilt, of 5 yards of wool material was developed just after we started the Kilt & Thistle nearly 15 years ago. The issue was that Highland Athletes were required to wear a wool kilt for competition. Well an 8 yard kilt in 105 Degree heat is hardly comfortable to throw the kabor in. Working with our kilt suppliers in Scotland, a compromise amount of fabric was established. The 5 yards of material was just enough material to keep it looking like a kilt and to keep its shape and allowed the athletes to qualify for competition. The 5 yard kilt has become popular in warmer climates and those on a budget. We have had many customers over the years purchase their first kilt as a 5 yard, some time later, to trade it in for an full 8 yard kilt. For those that only wear a kilt a couple of times a year, and I am not sure how you can only wear one so rarely, a 5 yard kilt may work well for you. We encourage you to weigh the pros and cons, take a look at my page on kilt buying, and contact us about your choices. The Lowlander kilt is available in both 16oz. Wool and 13oz. Wool. We encourage you towards an 8 yard kilt, because it is simply a better garment. Read my kilt choices page for all the pros and cons. We do not offer our kilts by electronic purchase. We take your kilt very seriously as it is our shared heritage.
